Chi (Taijiquan)
Taijiquan, also spelled tai chi chuan,
is a form of movement meditation and martial art with untold health
benefits. Taijiquan is an internal martial
art. Internal martial arts use the form of a martial art for
internal as well as external cultivation. The taijiquan
taught at the Center is based on the classical Yang style. Yang style taiji is famous for its remarkable health benefits.
Taiji is a martial art as well as a
health practice. Taiji builds strength and
fosters mental focus and an energized state of relaxation. The taiji classes at the Center work with our posture and
body use to build internal and external strength and to teach relaxation
in movement. The classes incorporate principles from other internal
martial arts, especially Yiquan, as well
as from qigong.
The classes at the Center focus on the
cultivation of health and vitality. The application of the techniques in
the taiji is used as an important teaching tool.
Understanding the application of the moves in the taiji
form helps to provide proper posture and intention, this in turn
increases the health benefits. Taiji is a
‘soft’ martial art and the regular classes at the Center do not involve
any form actual combat.
The senior taiji
instructor at the Center is Devon Hornby. Devon is currently a student of Sifu
Fong Ha and teaches under his authority. Sifu Fong studied Yang Style
tai chi with Dong Yingjie, and Yang Shouzhong, the eldest son of Yang Chengfu.
Fong Ha also studied Yiquan with Han Xingyuan a
renowned disciple of the founder Wang Xiangzhai.
Devon has been practicing martial
arts for thirty years and taiji has been his
main focus of practice and study for the last fifteen years. Devon is devoted the promulgation of the art of taiji and the lifestyle it entails.
